CAN NESPRESSO BE THE SUSTAINABLE CHOICE?

Independent experts have carried out a Life Cycle Assessment to investigate the environmental impact of portioned coffee in relation to other brewing methods. Surprisingly, the study shows that portioned coffee can have an equally small or even smaller environmental impact. This is because precision brewing systems such as Nespresso ensure that the exact amount of coffee, water and energy is used to brew a single cup. Other brewing methods can often lead to an overdose of coffee, brewing more than necessary or unnecessarily prolonged heating of the coffee pot.

HOW YOU BREW YOUR COFFEE IS IMPORTANT!

To understand the overall environmental impact of a product, we need to look at the product’s entire life cycle – from growing coffee beans to the coffee cup. It may be surprising to learn that coffee cultivation and home consumption are the two biggest sources of CO2 emissions associated with a cup of coffee, while packaging only accounts for a third.

Therefore, it is crucial to promote sustainable farming methods and use energy-efficient machinery to reduce the CO2 emissions from your coffee. At Nespresso, we take this into account through our sustainable coffee purchasing program – the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program – and by ensuring that our newer Nespresso machines are equipped with an automatic standby mode or switch-off function to minimize energy waste.

However, it is important to note that our efforts to reduce emissions do not only focus on the two largest factors in our carbon footprint. We have implemented measures to reduce emissions across our entire value chain. You can read more about our climate commitments on our website.
